The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

I absolutely love Donna Tartt. Considering the fact that she has only released three books in the last two decades, I was out-of-my-mind excited for this book and nearly skipped back to my dorm after it arrived in the mail. I’m also a huge fan of Oliver Twist and this novel has some elements of a 21st century version of the Dickens story. It’s about a young boy in New York who loses his mother and is passed around from home to home. There’s art, there’s crime, there’s mystery. I’m about one hundred pages in and, thus far, it’s fantastic. Coming from someone who is completely obsessed with Tartt’s first novel, The Secret History, that says a lot.

My local health food store (which is amazing, by the way) held their Customer Appreciation event over this past weekend, at which there was live music, food tastings, and tons of free samples. One of the best products I was introduced to through this event is Sharkies. They’re organic energy fruit chews. It’s like a healthy blend of fruit snack and an energy supplement. The product was created by a nutritionist for the purpose of maximizing “performance for skiing, snowboarding, and all winter mountain sports conducted at elevation”, but they’re also great for late study nights.

So, The Carrie Diaries is one of those shows that I would always make fun of whenever the promos came on television. I’m not going to lie, I thought it would be quite dumb but I started watching it last week on a whim and have found that it’s pretty entertaining. AnnaSophia Robb is likeable, the plot is fluffy and easy to watch, and there are several attractive actors, my personal favourite being Brendan Dooling who plays Carrie’s WASP-y, gay best friend! The only qualm I have is that the show is supposed to be set in the 80s, yet the main character definitely wore a J.Crew sweater from a few seasons ago…
